Aalenian Stage
term
It is the lower tier of the Middle Jurassic system. The leading fossils of the Aalenian Stage are ammonites. Widespread in the Caucasus and the Donetsk Basin.

A barge is a non-self-propelled vessel used as a base for drilling equipment when laying pipelines underwater or transporting oil and oil products over short distances.

Barrier flooding
term
A flood barrier, surge barrier or storm surge barrier is a specific type of floodgate, designed to prevent a storm surge or spring tide from flooding the protected area behind the barrier. A surge barrier is almost always part of a larger flood protection system consisting of floodwalls, levees (also known as dikes), and other constructions and natural geographical features.
Flood barrier may also refer to barriers placed around or at individual buildings to keep floodwaters from entering those buildings.

Bazhenov Formation
term
The Bazhenov Formation is a stratigraphic subdivision of the central part of the West Siberian Plate. It is represented by black mudstones, often platy, bituminous, with large amounts of fish remains, ammonites and belemnites, with interlayers of clayey limestone. Along the plate margins, the bituminosity decreases or disappears. The thickness is 10-70 m. The presence of bitumens allows the formation to be recently considered as a possible source of so called shale oil. It belongs to the Upper Jurassic.

Example: The Bazhenov Formation or Bazhenov Shale is a geological stratum in the West Siberian basin. It was formed from sediment deposited in a deep-water sea in Tithonian–early Berriasian time.

Chutes
A culvert is a pipeline for transporting liquids or gases that is laid when crossing a water barrier. The types of water bodies include river, sea and marsh culverts; the nature of the product transported: water pipeline, oil pipeline, oil product pipeline and gas pipeline; the design: single-pipe and double-pipe culverts. In addition, culverts differ in terms of their depth in water, internal pressure and diameter, the type of laying on the bottom of the water body, the number of pipes laid in parallel, and the nature of the environmental impact of the transported product.

Drill string
term
A drill string on a drilling rig is a column, or string, of drill pipe that transmits drilling fluid (via the mud pumps) and torque (via the kelly drive or top drive) to the drill bit. The term is loosely applied to the assembled collection of the smuggler pool, drill collars, tools and drill bit. The drill string is hollow so that drilling fluid can be pumped down through it and circulated back up the annulus (the void between the drill string and the casing/open hole).

Example: Most components in a drill string are manufactured in 31 foot lengths (range 2) although they can also be manufactured in 46 foot lengths (range 3).

Drill-core plug
term
A drill-core plug is a part of the drill string that is not detachable during the lowering and lifting operation. It consists of two, three or four drill pipes screwed together. The use of drill slides reduces the time required for tripping and reduces wear on mechanisms and tools used for pigging and releasing drill slides. The length of the drill string is determined by the height of the rig.

A numerical simulation is a calculation that is run on a computer following a program that implements a mathematical model for a physical system. Numerical simulations are required to study the behaviour of systems whose mathematical models are too complex to provide analytical solutions, as in most nonlinear systems.

Seal
noun
Seal - a relatively impermeable rock, commonly shale, anhydrite or salt, that forms a barrier or cap above and around reservoir rock such that fluids cannot migrate beyond the reservoir. A seal is a critical component of a complete petroleum system. The permeability of a seal capable of retaining fluids through geologic time is ~ 10-6 to 10-8 darcies.
